Terry Abrams, Artist Statement
These photographs are from Mid-Coast of Maine, where I have visited for over 20 years, taking and teaching photography workshops I find inspiration in the landscape and the culture, and moved to the area in 2024. These photographs are from recent years and are being displayed for the first time.
While rooted in a specific landscape, the images are less about documenting place than about perception. I work intuitively, using selective composition to isolate fragments of the natural world – light, color, rhythm – so that familiar environments become quietly abstract.
Color is central to my practice. Subtle tonal shifts and luminous passages reflect a longstanding interest in Impressionist painting and in how atmosphere can shape emotional experience. Rather than describing a scene, the photographs aim to evoke moments
that exist between observation and memory.
Created with an emphasis on calm and contemplation, the work invites viewers to slow down and engage with what is often overlooked. These images are intended as spaces of visual rest—offering stillness, presence, and a quiet sense of connection within the
everyday landscape.
These photographs are printed on a thick fine-art paper sourced from bamboo, which has a subtle textural, warmth and delicate color The ink and paper have archival permanence. This edition is limited to 10 prints of each image.
